MAYOR'S RECOGNITION AWARDS June 8, 2017 (37) June Thompson and Sachi.JPG

Having our Standard Poodles certified as Therapy Dogs and volunteering with them is a rewarding way to share our beautiful, social, and kind poodles with others. In 2017, we received a Distinguished Voluntary Service Award from Red Deer Mayor, Tara Veer (pictured above).

We began Therapy Dog Volunteering in 2007 with the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog group and went on to join the K9 Community Outreach Group with the Central Alberta Humane Society.

Evaluation and certification of each dog and human partner team is completed before dogs can begin visits to hospitals, nursing homes, high schools, and other facilities. In order to visit Pediatrics and children’s library reading programs, there is a second intensive evaluation. If the dogs qualify, they become certified as Children’s Therapy Dogs.

The human half of each team must undergo criminal background checks and vulnerable sector checks in order to qualify. Our poodles visit Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, including pediatrics, child and adolescent mental health, palliative care, and the intensive care unit. We are also regular visitors at Lindsay Thurber High School and the children’s department of the Red Deer Public Library.
